Welcome To The Soul-Patrol Newsletter
Every now and then I get a chance here on the Soul-Patrol Newsletter I get a chance to do something that before the internet existed, that I could only do with a few close friends. And that is to turn someone on to some music that I find to be totally different than anything that has come before it. The new release by Booboo Davis called "Drew, Missisippi" is such an album. One of the things about today’s current music scene is that it is one of division. The divisions in music are infact so large that in many cases it in fact separates people from each other. What we have with the album "Drew, Missisippi" is a piece of art that has the potential to actually reverse that trend. This is music that attempts to bring together several different styles of music that the "conventional wisdom" says can’t really be brought together. Booboo Davis ignores the conventional wisdow and suceeds at doing what was previously thought to be impossible. And the best news of all is that we actually are in dire need of this album. "Blues" and "Hip Hop" are two styles that on the surface have little in common. They both play to completely different audiences. However they both have the same "root". Booboo Davis goes straight to that "root" and comes up with an end result that is quite funky and enjoyable. He isn’t the first to try this. However in my opinion he is the first to succeed!!
We have a whole bunch of information for you in this issue of the Soul-Patrol Newsletter about Booboo Davis and the album "Drew, Missisippi", however the most important thing that we have for you is the ability to listen to this revolutionary album. In my opinion it’s one of the best releases of the year. Take a listen to it by clicking on the audio links and let me know what YOU think of this album.

BIOGRAPHY: Boo Boo Davis
Boo Boo Davis is the REAL DEAL. He is coming from the same area, period and tradition as most of the blues greats but there is one huge differenceÂ…Â… Boo Boo is still alive and kicking, writing and singing his musicÂ….. raw first-hand experience blues directly from the Delta.
James ‘Boo Boo’ Davis was born in Drew, Mississippi in the heart of Delta. It was the richest cotton land in the South and the large amounts of field workers attracted the best musicians from the surrounding areas. The entire Delta region was rich with blues, but the town of Drew was a particularly fertile one. Charley Patton stayed near Drew for many years and several legendary performers spent time there.
Boo Boo’s father, Sylvester Davis farmed cotton and played several instruments. Musicians who he played with include John Lee Hooker, Elmore James, Pete Williams and Robert Petway. Boo Boo remembers these and other musicians dropping by and rehearsing at their house.
At the age of five Boo Boo was playing the harmonica and singing in church with his mother. By thirteen he was playing guitar, and by eighteen he was playing out with his father and older brothers under the name of The Lard Can Band. This band traveled all throughout the Delta and Boo Boo recalls a Battle of Music between The Lard Can Band and a young BB King.
In the early sixties Boo Boo and his brothers moved to East St Louis and started playing real drums. His first gig was with Doc Terry. After he left Doc Terry he started a band with Little and that band became one of the hottest backup bands in St Louis.
In 1972 Boo Boo formed another Davis family band known as the Davis Brothers Band, It was the weekend house band at a club called Tabby’s Red Room in East St Louis for eighteen years. They played from 2 to 6 a.m. every Friday and Saturday and ever since Boo Boo has been a regular in the St Louis blues scene.
Boo Boo’s recording debut under his own name took place in September 1999 and the result was released on Black and Tan in January 2000. The CD (East St Louis) got very nice reviews in the international blues magazines and is played on blues radio stations all over the world.
In the USA Boo Boo performed among others at the KING BISCUIT BLUES FESTIVAL (Helena, AR) and the POCONOS BLUESFESTIVAL.
His first European tour took place in April 2000 and he performed in Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, France and the UK. In the UK he made recordings for the BBC Radio. Since then Boo Boo is touring Europe at least twice a year and he has played on a lot of prestigious jazz & blues festivals all over Europe. Just a few: NANCY JAZZ PULSATIONS, Blues festival in Eslov (Sweden). Colne GB Blues Festival (UK) and the NORTH SEA JAZZFESTIVAL (NL).
In April 2002 he released his second CD (Can Man) and in February 2004 the third one (The Snake). Both of them have been critically acclaimed. On his brand new CD (Drew, Mississippi) Boo Boo teamed up with Ramon Goose (from nublues) and they fused the raw blues sounds from the Mississippi delta with modern grooves. Like all the greats from the blues history Boo Boo’s singing has a timeless component that makes his message come thru loud and clear.

CD Review: Booboo Davis – "Drew, Missisippi"
(Traditional Blues/Revolutionary Hip Hop/Blues in Technicolor)
This isn’t the type of an album the you are going to buy as a result of going into a record store. Somebody has to turn you on to it!!! This is the type of an album that you are going to make a special trip to the record store to go and get. When you get to the record store they will of course tell you that they don’t have it in stock and they have never heard of it. And then they will tell you "let me check and see if I can order it for you". And when they go into the "back" (that mysterious place inside of the record store that we all think is where they keep the "gold"….lol) we are standing there waiting and hoping that when they come back that "they can order it". When they come back, they say "we can order it, and it will be here on Friday"… You breathe a sigh of relief and in your head quickly re-arrange your entire Friday schedule so that you can get to the record store as soon as possible!!!
So what does the album "Drew, Missisippi" by Boo Boo Davis sound like??? Well I think that it’s what Muddy Waters or John Lee Hooker would sound like if they were young "bluesmen" in 2006. Back in the early 1990’s when I first came on the internet, I belonged to a Blues discussion forum and I wrote a piece that compared the lyrics of Muddy Waters and Ice Cube. Of course my point was that the lyrical subject matter of BOTH Muddy Waters and Ice Cube songs are EXACTLY THE SAME. And of course the other people in the discussion forum thought I was crazy to mention Muddy Waters and Ice Cube in the same sentence. I always thought that piece was one of the best pieces of musical analysis that I have ever written, unfortunately I no longer have it otherwise I would post it for you. The reason I mention it today is because ever since the day I wrote that piece I have been waiting for this album to appear, and now it has. The only albums that I can think of to compare it to is Jimi Hendrix – "Are You Experienced" or perhaps to Miles Davis – "In A Silent Way". This is a revolutionary piece of art that fuses together musical styles that when you say it, most people would flinch, however after you hear it, the art makes absolutely perfect sense and you realize that whomever the people are that created this are to be thanked for creating such great and innovative art, that is so far outside of the mainstream, that if the mainstream ever got a hold of it, that the mainstream itself would be "compelled" to change!!!
The idea of doing this is hardly new. Many "blues artists" have tried to do this over the past 10 years, however not one that I have ever heard has perfected it, till now. As soon as you listen to "Drew, Missisippi" by Boo Boo Davis, you will know that you have discovered something special, in fact it sounds like it could change the the lives of many people, if enough people would bother to listen.

QUOTES – What Others are saying about: Boo Boo Davis – "Drew, Mississippi"
Maybe you don’t want to belive what Soul-Patrol has to say about Boo Boo Davis? In this case I don’t expect that you would be completely satisfied with our opinion. So therefore I wanted to include a few quotes from some other notables around the world about the music of Booboo Davis…
The entire disc was recorded live in the studio, which is no doubt part of the of the reason for the music=s sensual, high-energy cohesiveness…… Little Milton re-incarnated as backstreet signifier………This CD is a blast of fresh air.
Living Blues (USA)
Boo Boo Davis growles it out on this one. This is blues, blues, blues to the bone. I like this mans singing. He gives it his all on this release. Every tune is filled with a haunting realness and a special sound of it=s own. The Snake is one of the most powerful CDs to be released for the blues market this year. If Blues is your gig, then this CD is for you.
Roots Music Report
The Snake does succeed in showcasing several sides of the eccentric singer and harp player. It’s at times wicked, at time heartfelt, and always brimming with plain common sense. His dozen songs are refreshing and unabashedly simple.
Blues Wax
Great stuff! To everyone who loves Howlin’ Wolf’s raw Chicago blues, you’ll love this release. It proves that great traditional blues is still being recorded with the same intensity as the masters who taught it to us. Highly recommended.
Blues Bytes (USA)
Back to the Roots (B)
Trois Rivieres Blues (F)
