All My Funky Friends – Dawn Silva

All My Funky Friends – Dawn Silva

Dawn Silva, original Bride of Funkenstein, signs a European Recording deal with Holland/France/Sony. The funk diva’s debut CD All My Funky Friends will be released December 4th 2000!!!! Here’s hoping that Miss Silva’s funk masterpiece will put R&B/Funk music back on mainstream radio!!

I was prepared not to like this album, just figuring it was yet another attempt by an "old funkateer" to ca$h in off of a younger audience who isn’t old enough to know the difference.

(boy was I wrong :))

Did you say that you liked Funky music?.. Well then be sure to check out this new release called To All My Funky Friends, by former Bride of Funkenstein, Dawn SilvaÂ…

Here is my track by track review of the albumÂ…

AS LONG AS IT’S ON THE ONE

Very nice groove, kinda reminds me of a Prince song and it would fit in well on the Emancipation album! Funky Fresh groove that stays strong thought the whole song

BREAK ME OFF

First of all I really dig the title of this song J

Once again, this sounds like a Prince song (only Prince hasn’t put out anything this good in a whileÂ…..lol)

Dawn is of course talking about "breaking off some of that old school funk" (take your minds outta the gutter!). It’s also got some elements of ZAPP up in here and Dawn makes it all sound quite nice

RED LIGHT DISTRICT

"& if you’re ready to FUNK around the RED LIGHT DISTRICT is off the hookÂ…"

Well, well well, is that the voice of "DaBrat"? (sure sounds like her) This song’s got a mean ass groove that doesn’t quitÂ…

"do you feel like FUNKIN aroundÂ…Â…feel like FUNKIN aroundÂ…."

(yes Dawn I do!)

This funky/erotic cut is SMOKIN!!!!!!!!

I wonder why all of these songs so far sound like Prince?

I probably shouldn’t care about that, these songs are badd!

CLOSE TO YOU

NOPE, this song isn’t a remake of the Karen Carpenter hit song from the 1970’s J but it is a very nice slow jam. It’s VERY funky and you could even GRIND off of it. Black radio should take a close look at this song for airplay (Negro radio stations need not apply)

SHAKE IT DOWN

Remember that hit song by Toni Braxton called "You’re Makin Me High" that was out a few years ago?

Remember that Prince spinoff group called "the Family" from the 1980’s?

Well this joint sounds like a combination of the two (with just a touch of Roger in it) and it’s a "badd slamajama".

I’ll tell ya, if a few damn "negro radio stations" had the GUTS to play this song it would be a MONSTER HIT RECORD (but somehow I doubt that will happen). It’s my favorite song on this entire CD and I have played it over and over again since I first heard it!

I’D RATHER BE WITH YOU

This song is a remake of the Bootsy Collins classic. A nice slow funky groove

WHOLE LOTTA GAME

ALL MY FUNKY FRIENDS

DISCO TO GO

funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ….. funkateer alertÂ…..

"here we are with a groove that you haven’t heard in SOOOOOO LongÂ…"

I think that I changed my mindÂ….

THIS IS NOW MY FAVORITE SONG ON THE CD!!!!!!!!!!

Now if you wanna turn out a house party, just throw this badd boy on and watch the Negroes get all sweaty and (watch their hair get all nappyÂ….lol)

"the MOTHERSHIP CONNECTION is HEREÂ….."

try some "Disco to Go", shake your rump a little bit and smile… 🙂

CALLING OUT YOUR NAME

This is a very nice slow jam, it’s sorta in an "Erykah Badu mode". Too bad it comes right after "Disco to Go" cuz right now I wanna shake my rump some more J

DO YOU REMEMBER THEM

This cut is liveÂ…

It’s a very nice tribute to Eddie, Tyrone and Tiki

"Do you believe that the Mothership is comingÂ…"

ON THE ONE (outro)

To be "on the one’, is to be in a state of Nirvana, which is right about where I’m at as this CD comes to an end

So what’s my overall assessment?

(don’t even think twice, just BUY IT)

So Dawn, when ya coming to the east coast?

🙂
