43 Top 10 Hits Among 65 Original Recordings From The Supremes, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, The Chairmen Of The Board And More Than 20 Other Artists
The first comprehensive hits-story of the most successful team of American pop and R&B songwriters of the ’60s and ’70s, the three-CD Heaven Must Have Sent You: The Story Of Holland/Dozier/Holland (Hip-O/UMe), released June 21, 2005, is a long overdue tribute to the composers/producers whose work for ^ The Supremes, The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, Martha & The Vandellas, Four Tops and more not only defined Motown’s "Sound Of Young America" but created much of the Great American Songbook.
Featuring 65 tracks spanning 1961-2003, including 43 Top 10 pop or R&B hits (13 of them #1), Heaven Must Have Sent You: The Story Of Holland/Dozier/Holland was compiled with the full involvement of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Edward Holland, Jr. From 1963-1967, Holland-Dozier-Holland was the chief hitmaking engine of the Motown machine. Departing in 1968 to found Invictus/Hot Wax Records, they launched The Chairmen Of The Board, Freda Payne, and McKinley Jackson. In the mid-’70s, they returned to the Motown fold to deliver yet more hits. The package includes a booklet filled with vintage photographs punctuating an essay by music historian Adam White.
Several rarities, led by a pair of CD-debuting Eddie Holland performances; 10 other tracks performed by Holland-Dozier-Holland in various combinations, and more are heard alongside chart-topping classics "(Love Is Like A) Heat Wave" and "Jimmy Mack" (Martha & The Vandellas); "Where Did Our Love Go," "Baby Love," "Come See About Me," "Stop! In The Name Of Love," "I Hear A Symphony," "You Keep Me Hangin’ On," "You Can’t Hurry Love" and "Love Is Here And Now You’re Gone" (The Supremes); "I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" and "Reach Out I’ll Be There" (Four Tops), and "(I’m A) Road Runner" (Jr. Walker & The All Stars).
Also on Heaven Must Have Sent You are the Marvin Gaye gems "Can I Get A Witness," "Baby Don’t You Do It" and "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)," and other hits from The Supremes ("Reflections" and the #1 Dance "I’m Gonna Let My Heart Do The Walking") and Four Tops ("Baby I Need Your Loving," "It’s The Same Old Song" and "Standing In The Shadows Of Love"). Still more H-D-H magic appears on recordings from The Marvelettes, The Miracles, Mary Wells, Dusty Springfield, Kim Weston, The Elgins, The Isley Brothers, Chris Clark, Flaming Ember, The Chairmen Of The Board ("Give Me Just A Little More Time"), Freda Payne ("Band Of Gold"), The Politicians featuring McKinley Jackson, The Band, Michael Jackson, The Originals, Jackson 5, Eddie Kendricks, Shalamar, The Doobie Brothers and Simply Red.
For music fans, Heaven Must Have Sent You: The Story Of Holland/Dozier/Holland is indeed heaven sent.
